Steadily increasing energy prices and growing concern regarding the environmental impact of electrical power generation and storage have led to substantial new investment in solar cell and fuel cell technologies.

At the same time, rapid growth in the variety and number of portable digital and wireless devices, as well as growing interest in fuel cell and hybrid vehicles, has led to an increased demand for more efficient energy storage options such as advanced lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors.

All of these energy technologies require improvements in materials, design and manufacturing processes. Needed innovations include:

  • New efficient methods for product quality assurance during the manufacture process. Nondestructive testing (NDT) methods allow 100% automatic quality control during manufacturing, and can improve production efficiency, reduce costs and ensure safety and reliability of energy devices. Appropriate NDT methods could address recently reported concerns regarding the safety and reliability of conventional lithium ion batteries, for example.
  • New technologies and designs for improving efficiency and power characteristics of electrical energy generation and storage devices.
  • More efficient and less expensive materials for solar cells, fuel cells, lithium ion batteries and supercapacitors, including new conducting polymers for lithium ion battery electrolytes and fuel cell membranes.
